spotifyuk: @hozier shares one of his favourite memories while making his recent album Unreal Unearth π
wake up babe new way to sign off in emails just dropped
i need to walk straight into the ocean
Just thinking about the parallels between Francesca+I, Carrion (Icarian) and Sunlight from his last album.
“If I hit a squall allow the ground to find its brutal way to me” with “strap the wings to me, death-trap clad happily with wax melted I’d meet the sea” with “I’d tell them put me back in it, I would do it again, if I could hold you for a minute I’d go through it again.”
Love and devotion and the willingness to be complicit in your own downfall for just one minute with the one you love, to destroy yourself chasing after it, to know that it will end (all things end!) but doing it anyway.
When Hozier said “How the mouth must be employed in every corner of itself” in a song (butchered Tongue) about the pain of losing culture through the specific imagery of loss of language after he said “The unemployment of the mouth” in Through Me (The Flood) in a verse about trying to measure loss

unreal unearth has so many echoes of his debut album. “de selby pt 2” and “to be alone” in the desire to kill the lights and become one, “butchered tongue” and “foreigner’s god” in the struggles of language, “first time” and a very early interview where he describes falling in love as a death. it’s not a rehash - it feels like simply a returning, reflecting on those same themes (and on, perhaps, the same events that inspired them) through new eyes. as a long time fan, it feels like coming home
the official Unreal Unearth track listing per the cd/vinyl covers has each song (or in a few cases, a pair of songs) subtitled with circles of hell from danteβs inferno (and in the cases of De Selby pt. 1 & 2, and First Light, the Descent into hell and the Ascent back out) so uhhh. smth to think on.
